Ultrasound uses high frequency sound to produce an image of structures inside your body. When pregnancy is advanced, and the baby is larger, it is easy to see the baby using an abdominal scan, and we will try to do this where possible.

However, when the pregnancy is very early, we are trying to look at something which may be only 2-5 mm in size. If you want us to be as accurate as possible then we need to ask your permission to do a vaginal scan which places the probe very close to the uterus rather than through the fatty layers of the tummy. Select your scan on the right.
